| I was looking at going down the DSLR route, but found the cost of the housing prohibitive for the sort of photography I do. I've just bought a Canon Ixus 750 from PIXMANIA with a 1gb memory card. It's a 7.1 million pixel shot, so quality is so much better than I'm used to. press to shoot is almost non existant. With loads of functions (a few clever ones like 'Kids and Pets', 'Beach' and 'Foliage'... and one that really interests me 'underwater'! Not sure how effective this will be!) the usual manual settings etc. The camera has produced some really great shots, so I've now ordered a housing for it from Cameras Underwater Homepage: Underwater housings, stills and video cameras, accessories.. The beauty of this for me, over the DSLR route, is I can fit the camera (obviously when it's not in it's housing!) in my jeans pocket, so it comes with me everywhere! 500ish high quality photos on the 1 gig card. Battery lasts about 150 shots, depending on flash usage etc. so I'm looking to get a spare (never remember to charge the one in the camera until it tells me!) All this camera and housing cost me about £375. Oh and it takes reasonable video too! HtH Pete ![]()

| dSLR vs Compact I bought a housing for my Nikon Coolpix 5000 and come to the conclusion that I'd rather have a heavy, bulky, expensive dSLR housing every time. I've got some great pictures of fish tails due to a combination of slow AF and shutter lag. A compact camera is fine for photos of divers and underwater landscapes, but the slow auto-focus is incredibly frustrating. I've now picked up a used Ikelite D70 housing and I'm saving up to have the iTTL circuit fitted (another £200). After that I'll start saving for a DS-125 (£700) In case you haven't spotted it yet, diving is expensive but underwater photography is like having a hole in your pocket through which money pours... Just my thoughts, Keith. |
