Plastic bag underwater housing

Has anyone had any luck with these plastic bag styles of housing?

Cameras Underwater: ewa-marine digital stills housings.

They claim they're OK to 30m, and seeing as they cost over a £100 they must be a quality product. Musn't they?

I've got a Panasonic FZ4 camera that I'd love to try out underwater, but not if these housings are not up to the job!

Question to ask is do you want to risk it!
Personally I would flog your camera on ebay and get yourself a Canon A620 or Sony Cybershot for which you can get a hard case to suit for similar money!
The hard cases have a better depth rating and more importantly protect your precious camera from the knocks and scrapes that are inevitable when diving!

Yeah, I've got a Canon A85 (which I think is a Canon A620 about 3 years ago) and a decent hard case, but it's not that hot. Autofocus is very slow etc.

The Panasonic DMC-FZ4 is faaaaaar better, what with optical image stabilisation, a much better macro etc. Perhaps I'll just keep it as an above water jobby............

But then, 'he who dies with the most gadgets wins' !

I have a Panasonic FZ20 with the 12x Zoom Leica lens. It's a brilliant camera. I had been looking at those plastic bags as well and wondering what they were like.

I am sorry I have got to agree with the previous....

get a camera that takes a hard case... deep cleaning my pt-020 housing when we last returned from egypt I was amazed to see the amount of "scraps" it had received... not to mention I dare not think what a plastic bag does when it gets in the water, just look at what happens to the dry suits we wear...

on the other hand, if they were no good then they would probably not sell them year after year I just feel the hard plastic case offer that bit more protection

several posts have pointed out the durability of housings and I have to concur. I looked at my housing the other day and thought .....well I couldnt honestly sell it on ebay without declaring the scratches and scrapes on it. Also that the 'tray' bit is completley bare of its covering or coating in one place where it has been 'rested' on rocks etc.
