Fantastic underwater pictures

A picture competition from SERPENT (Scientific and Environmental ROV Partnership using Existing iNdustrial Technology):

Some brilliant stuff:

A 'piglet squid' swimming around subsea equipment

An image of the deep-sea demersal shark Deania calceus (Birdbeak dogfish) and Synaphobranchus kaupii (arrowtooth eels) taken from the RObust BIOdiversity lander (ROBIO)

Yeti crab Kiwa hirsuta (Crustacea, Decapoda, Anomura), collected on the vent site of Pacific-Antarctic Ridge by Alvin (PAR 5 cruise, MBARI, California). Picture taken in the Centob lab, Ifremer in July 2005

Pardon my stupidity, but is the Piglet Squid a real creature?

He's very cute, if he is!

Phew, that's a relief! As soon as I posted, I read the name of the hairy chappie and it sounded like a wind-up (the Yeti bit), and I thought I was in for all sorts of p*ss-taking

I see what you mean now ...

Piglet squid, Birdbeak dogfish, Yeti crab - it is a bit suspect

The site looks legit though - and there's some more excellent piccies there.

nice bit of chromatic aberration around the first one - have used a great plugin for photoshop to fix that!

1st one looks a bit dubious and I was initially sceptical, but I've seen the yeti crab one before and it is apparently legit - BBC ran a news item on it a few months ago, and am sure it was discussed on here...probably with finless dragging the tone down by talking about crabs and hair...

and I've found one to lower the tone good and proper - in their technical images section

Brief description of contents: 'La Madonna dello Ionio' - multibeam image of the seabed south of Calabria, Italy (depths 900-1800 m) showing a feature that resembles a reclining woman. The Madonna takes her shape from three mud volcanoes lying within a fault-bounded depression. The mud cones forming her breasts are each up to 1.5 km wide and 200 m high, her head may be a cone in formation. The data were acquired by the r/v OGS Explora in summer 2005 using a Reson 8150 multibeam system, processed using Caris HIPS at a resolution of 50 m and the image produced using DMAGIC (IVS) software.
