Question Video Lights - Info needed quick!

Hi all,

Finally got myself a USVH housing c/w sony camera, and now need to arrange some video lights...

Mainly for using in UK upto 35m, mainly going to be "chasing fish" but also trying to get the odd wreck shot...

So far looking at the Kowalski Mini Xenon (10w HID) as a good all rounder, but would appreciate any advice/info from people here...

Ta!

If you want to buy viddy lights, I think I'd go with a couple of UK light cannons, cheap as chips and a bright beam. Its also pretty straightforward to remove the handle and attach to loc-line.

Not sure how a "Mini Xenon" can be described as a 10W HID, seeing as real HID bulbs dont just contain Xenon but there you go The price of this light is frightening...

Hi Andy,

I don't know why they call them 'xenons' either as they are proper HID lamps... Is the reflector in the light cannons suitable for video work...?

Ta.

Yes, they come with two diffusers that you stick inside the lens and it gives a nice wide even spread. For the money you won't get better, but don't buy the rechargable ones. Get yourself some good NiMH C Cells and a charger for much less money and better burn times.

Get the biggest brightest video Lights that you can afford. I've got a pair of 24w HIDs on my video rig, and they are just about bright enough. Halcyon or Salvo both do video lights, with proper reflectors. The Halcyon 50w HIDS are a thing of beauty, but also silly expensive.

Also remember to budget for Light arms, which are not cheap.

I currently use my Greenforce HID 100 with a video lens on it, gives a nice even light spread, plus I have a great torch when I am not using the video.

Eventually I will get a second, I will then have twin HID100 head (30w each) much more versatile than any video lights.
Using ultra light arms and a 50mm torch holder it all fits together well.
