| I have hundreds of slides to transfer to digital. What I've done is brought an Epson Perfection 3490 scanner that has the option to do slides. It's relatively inexpensive and works well. It does however have to be done one by one. (Also does negatives )

| I guess that would depend on how much you want to spend in both money and time terms. I know you can get specialised scanners for the job, but two minutes on Jessops web site pulled up this service Jessops.com - In Store Printing Might be worthwhile if there aren't too many or you are hard up for time |

| If you want to scan a lot of slides, then be prepared to spend a lot of time in front of your computer, as most consumer scanners are pretty slow scanning slides. if you get a flatbed scanner you will need one that has a light in the top lid, something like the canon 8400f looks good and will do 12 slides at a time. I have one of the older Canon scanners (8000f) and they are pretty good. You can get this one for about £110. I spent a while scanning stuff with my scanner and the software that comes with the canon is prretty easy, and if you have a mac, it has proper software for them as well. I think it includes photoshop elements (probably an older version) You can also get a dedicated slide/negative scanner, but they are not as flexible. Good ones can cost a fair bit but will arguably give you a better result. John R |

| lightboxes You can get some decently priced light boxes over at 7dayshop.com 7dayshop.com - Lightboxes I have the smaller one and am happy with it. They also do some good slide viewers of which I also have the desktop one. I have an Epson 4990 scanner which I got to be able to transfer slides to the comp. What ever scanner you end up getting if you decide to do it yourself it is going to take ages to scan in and then you'll spend even more time adjusting them in Photoshop! |

| I'm currently saving loads of slides to the computer. I want to save them with th best quality possible, should be saved as JPEG or TIFF?

| TIFFs are uncompressed files. JPEGs are compressed. Save to Tiff and then make a Jpeg from that. If you make a Jpeg from a Jpeg you will lose a lot of information.

My old version 6 of Paint Shop Pro can save TIFFs using the LZW compression method, so I'm sure it will be available in modern software. Adrian
