Yeah thanks Kirky.

one question - do you keep these stored in my mode or did you change the apperture to get the shots?

actually another, how do get such sharp image with a relatively slow shutter speed?  Is this the result of using and external strobe?

Oh and were you in mid water or anchored on the bottom?  When trying to hove and take photies I find the images are all over the place and blurred.

so, more than one question really.

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Tim - the 4040z has a `custom` feature that allows you to store settings for future use, thus I store my UW settings in here.

I find the 1/60 shutter speed best in UK waters - I also like as much depth of field so I try and use a small aperture. I also use a diffuser on the strobe to reduce the harsh affects that can occur without it.

The sharp pic is down to the beauty of digital - once you lock on to the subject and stay with it you get a good result - I had to follow the jellyfish mid water which was a bastard - hence I was so pleased with the outcome. This also explains why the background is blurred - I got the lock on correct - sometimes you think you have locked on but the camera may be slightly off subject - result - the camera gives you a great background and an out of focus subject. The main rule is get as close as you can - this is better than any mixture of settings. So get close, lock on and you will always get a decent pic. I always use the LCD to frame the pic - if you are gonna do this get some good rechargeable batteries - I am using Uniross 2000`s - you can now get 2300`s. In colder UK waters I can get 2 dives, about 150 pics with strobe, LCD and fulltime autofocus on (which really drains the power)

Last, and by no means least - photoshop 7 is a must for manipulating pics on the PC - I used auto levels on the jellyfish and the difference to what was a very good pic stunned me once `auto levelled)

If you fancy, we could organise a photo dive - practice is the best cure !!

Hi,

Just a thought, for what it is worth the company I part own sells digital imaging systems for medical research.

We are due to start in October a series of workshops up and down the country. I can sneek a couple of people in to each location, so, if anyone is interested shout now, I guess the first two to shout who are near enough to a location will get it.

The workshops are over two days, the first is on image capture, only the morning is relevent to the sort of digital cameras we use for underwater photography. The second day is image manipulation and processing. The processing will be of no interest but the manipulation is based upon using Photoshop.

I will forward dates and locations to the people who get in first.

If any at all.

Please e-mail me on

Please do not use this address for any other purpose.

Oh yeh, please let me know where you are based.

Andrew
