Anyone know the difference between a type H and a type M xd card? I just wanna know before I lay out some money

AFAIK type H are the newer faster transfer rate cards and also offer increased storage capacity.

I think your camera has to be "H" compatible - but don't quote me on this

AFAIK only the newer cameras can take the H type xd cards have a look at this site it may tell you a bit more, Just find your camera model and it'll tell you which sizes it will take.
