Camera help and advice please

My third Olympus camera has just died. It was an MJU600, a very easy to use aim and shoot.

Each camera has had heavy use but only lasted about 18 months so I don't want another Olympus.

Now I want to replace it with something that takes good pictures and is easy to use above and below water.

I like macro photography but the only decent macro pictures I have ever taken are with my old Sea and Sea MX10 (which I sold a few years ago and is still going strong.)

Now I would like something digital, with good macro facility where you don't have to hold your breath or use a tripod (asking a lot I know).

Has anyone got a Sea and Sea digi camera? Or what else would you recommend that won't break the bank and that a keen luddite could use?

I would like to improve my photography skills so a camera with automatic options would be good.

Thank you in advance for advice.

Edit: anyone want to buy my housing?????

Died? Are you sure you didn't kill it?

Get a man to do it for you? ..... and take the pictures!

There is no need for thanks as I my reward is in the doing!

Wow, I've just been looking at some piccies of Miss Prim!

I would have thought that any digital camera will have auto settings and that the requirement is to get the manual settings that you can change under water? I get confused easily .... do you require womanual settings?

Since I haven't had much money for some time (just after Bakelite phones came into being) I haven't really looked at much in the shiny department. If you don't mind my asking, why did your cameras die and, if they were giving results you liked, then why change?

All three Olympus cameras have had shutter jam. After the warranty expires. And they don't give good macro results.

Seeing as you, Finless are the only one giving advice and you seem to know Feck all about jack sh*t, I think I'll just go and do a spot of housework.

Vonny,

don't know how much you want to spend - I'm using a Canon Ixus 750 with Canonhousing from Cameras underwater... cost me about £350 in total. I think there is a 850 and a 900 version out now... piccies are good and does a nice drop of video too!

Aha! That opinion is a cross between being unfair to me and an apparent lack of my personal hygeine!

I know quite a bit about photography ..... albeit nothing about underwater photography.

My MX10 and flash gun have had very little use in the UK because Ialways get crap results ........ I did get some brilliant (quality/clearness) from Tenerife.

Oh well, I know when I'm not wanted ............. FFS, second to housework ................... . All those years of experience ............. what do the yoof of today know about anything?

I think you'll find that is a double negative, either he knows feck all about anything or he knows everything about Jack Sh*t.

Matt

(oh and I use a Nikonos - so know feck all about digital u/w cameras),
ok I have used it once, before Tom berates me.

I used to have a 3.2 meg pixel Sea & Sea camera. Whilst it got reasonable results I found the shutter lag really annoying. It was well over a second then the camera froze for 20 seconds of so whilst it wrote to the card. No idea if the later ones are any better. I have been pretty impressed by the Canon compacts. The Ixus 850 IS from Canon DIGITAL IXUS 850 IS review cheap prices Canon IXUS 850 IS best buy discount online uk shop looks like a great camera and has a 3cm range for makro. You can get a 40m rated Canon housing or a 60m rated Ikelite housing from Cameras Underwater. Cameras Underwater: Housings for Canon Ixus 850is: WPDC9 and Ikelite 6147.8

Did you try sending it back to Olympus anyway? They repaired mine for free after the warranty had expired. I think the latest ones have 2 year warranty anyway.

My 5060 does reasonable macro.
