Question Which strobe for digital compact?

Since I've been a good boy this year I'm going to ask Santa for a strobe for Christmas and was wondering which one to go for.

I've got a Fuji E900 with an Ikelite housing and Inon UWL-105AD lens. Can anyone recommend a strobe suitable for this setup (that doesn't cost the earth) - I've had a look at the UWdigitalcamera.com site and the Inon strobes look like they may do the job either the Z-240 or D-2000 type2 or maybe the Sea & Sea YS110

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Cheers,

Jeff

Make sure you get one with lots of power output control - the fully automatic ones don't work very well. 10 - 12 settings gives you control over the exposure. Anything less and you'll end up disappointed.

INON are fantastic. I bought a pair of Z240s a while back and they are the mutts nuts.

I'll be selling my Z220 if you're interested, send me a pm

If you've got an Ike housing then why not go for a DS-51 and have full TTL?

It's perhaps not as shiney as you're looking for, but I recently bought a second hand YS-60 and a HeinrichsWeikamp GbR TTL sensing adapter and I'm very, very impressed.

For the price of a new INON you could kit yourself out with two strobes, strobe arms, manifold and an adapter.

Rob,

For full TTL, do you need a hotshoe connection? if so my camera doesn't have one, but I could use a TTL sensing adapter mentioned in Ben's post. I think the reason I didn't look into a DS-51 was the flash coverage of 80 degrees, I was told I'd need two strobes if I used my wide angle lens.

Cheers,

Jeff

Jeff,
Ignore the Ike then. The ys110 was what I considered when I upgraded earlier in the year, but went with Ike to get TTL. But if I was you I'd go for uwila's Z220.

Ben,

You've got me all wrong, I don't care about shiny kit (most of my dive kit is second hand, cos I'm too tight to buy it new ) I just want something that works well.

My problem is, I'm very inexperienced in underwater photography. So I'm not sure what strobes would work with my camera and I can't really afford to make a expensive mistake buying a strobe that isn't suitable or requires a Phd to operate.

However, if I can get enough info from here, I might very well buy something off a YDer or ebay. BTW I like your suggestion for using the synch adapter.

Cheers,

Jeff

I use the YS110 (TTL or Slave) as a slave on my Fuji F10, it is very good and powerful enough. With the Inon UWL 100 it is fine but not wide enough with the dome port, so I have to use 2!
