Had a quick look at the manual and I don't think the MX10 will do what you want. The manual says you have a fixed shutter speed of 1/100th sec, and even at max aperture (f4.5) you'll struggle in most UK waters except shallow and sunny. If there's a B setting for the shutter you'll be OK, provided you can keep the camera steady.

Just in case, Nikonos meters sometimes come up on eBay, and for not much money, or you can stick a land meter in a plastic bag (Ewa Marine sell suitable ones) but with this latter approach once you're below about 10m you'll find the bag glued to the meter and the controls impossible to operate.

Uk natural light scenery is not practical, close stuff much easier -people and fish

Run a test roll in the pool. Set up a target.

Set aperture to f4 / f8 / f16

Shoot at 2' , 3', 4', 5', 6' (use a tape)

Record the results. Look at your returned prints and make a judgement.

Ignore the ambient light - you are using flash.

In practice bracket your shots and chuck the duds.

Learn from trial and error.

Good advice but I know the camera works well in clear water within its specific focal ranges. Getting similar conditions in my bit of the Channel is not easy.

Perhaps I will go digital after all.
