Canon G9 with WP -DC21 housing

Hi
I'm quite new to the photography world and have a Maldives trip coming up in the next couple of weeks. I was wondering what Aperture and Shutter speed would be best suited to shoot with in clear blue water conditions. I would prefer to shoot in RAW. I've had a play with the camera and can't seem to change the AV or TV settings when camera is in the housing. Any ideas are tips would be helpful.

Thanks

Hughesy

Talking Great choice!

I got one of these recently aswell. Only had it in the pool so far though. I didn't have any issues changing modes though.

Try playing with it in the housing but not in the water. Make sure you have the camera sitting in the case properly. Sorry if that's a bit obvious!

There is some good info and tips on scubaboard believe it or not. Try here:

The wetpixel.com forum also has a few threads on the G9.

Wish I was going back to the Maldives!

Good luck.

Assuming that you intend to shoot with the camera alone, no add-on lenses and no external flash, put it in aperture priority (Av?) mode and set f4. Review the pics you take, if they look a bit light, adjust the camera to give less exposure, if they're a bit dark set it to give extra exposure. You want as much exposure as possible without burning out highlights - use the histogram option if the G9 has it, or if there's a screen where burnt-out highlights flash try that.

If you're within a few feet of your subject you can try shots with the internal flash on, but be aware that this is likely to cause backscatter from the various bits of detritus floating in the water. If you're further away than four feet turn it off. Probably a better option down to about 20m is to turn off the internal flash and set the white balance manually, even though you're shooting RAW and can set white balance on the computer later.

Best advice I was ever given is to get close, then get closer - the closer you are the less water between you and your subject, the sharper and more contrasty your shots become.

Enjoy the trip and post us some pics when you get back!

Thanks for all the help and links you posted they've been very useful and have sorted my problems. It was the control dial that i was having trouble with but I found that by holding the button top left and then pressing either left are right it would adjust AV or TV.

Thanks

Hughesy
