Yes, I know that. It has been mentioned often enough in the forum. However, that answer is like Shumacher telling me that he can drive a Lada faster than I can drive a Ferrari! Or that a six-inch di*k can perform just as well as a nine-inch one! So, what has this answer taught me about photography? Zilch!
and knowing the model of the camera would teach you zilch as well. I would respect this comment of yours if your question had been:

"So Triplefin, how did you get such great shots - what do you think was important in how you did it?"

However a simple 'what camera did you use' implies that the most important aspect was the type of camera - you didn't seem to want to know anything else about her technique.

True, but you didn't ask how she did it, so how on earth can you tell if she used a feature which is better implemented in her camera than in all the others?

Well, what we're actually saying is that you don't 'need to know which camera to buy'. You need to know what your budget is and then buy to that. Very good shots are still possible with cheaper models, especially older ones like the Olly 5050.

Now that's a whole different game and it can be very useful to know why people chose one model over another - as long as the person you're asking actually produces some good shots which conveniently lets me off the hook

lovely pictures Jane and you have a great eye for composition. I really must get a strobe for my 5050.

Hey, give me a chance...how did you know that I was not going to follow up my questions later on, with her techniques? It all got diverted with "...its not the camera, but...."

Again, an assumption on your part. It is always good to know which model that we are talking about here as perhaps, I might know the model too. And may be able to discuss things using the same terminologies. I have found out that some cameras have some slight difference in terminologies for the same functions. I have on occasions been slightly confused by it, seeing that I am relatively new to all these. Also, I am more inclined to examine a camera closer when I am browsing in the shops, if I have some degree of knowledge / familiarity with it. So, tell me, what is so wrong about showing a little bit of interest other than a purely photographic techique one?

Again, I refer to my first response above.

Now I know that you are really pulling me legs.......are you saying that the type of cameras that people use are merely a way for folks to show off their dosh? If I follow your logic, then those with dslr must be real show off pricks, right? I have not mentioned at any time that cheap cameras can't produce very good shots. But surely, some differences in different cameras produce qualities of varying degree?

hmmmmmmm......do I detect a hint of false modesty here?

No worries, no problem at all. Will look up your website to gain some more insights to photography.

So, if triplefin don't feel that I am hijacking her thread, may I ask her how she shot her excellent pics (phew.........finally managed to get this out)?

No, not merely a way to show off their dosh. I'm saying that the primary difference between good shots, like Jane's, and average ones comes from the photographer and therefore our first question should be 'how did you achieve that?'. A good photographer will always get a better shot than an average person. It would be far more complimentary to the photographer to ask 'how' in the first instance and then ask if a specific camera feature was required to enable the shot.

Not really - I'm one of those 'real show off pricks' and I take loads and loads of shots and every now and then a half decent one pops up ( now, this really is false modesty)

On a one day course with tourist, Martin Edge agreed that everyone eventually gets a stunning shot as long as they take enough. The skill comes in knowing how to do so and then having the eye, patience and diving skills to achieve it every time.

but back to the OP: Well done again, great shots!

Photography for me is about opportunity and knowledge.

You need the knowledge of how your camera works how to light the shot, good composition, that gives you the skill to take good shots then you just need th opportunity to be in the right place at the right time. The more well known photographers get more chances to take thhe great shots.

They are Deeplet Anemones and grow to about 30cm across. Although it was a fairly bright day it was fairly dark underwater, probably the dark rocks didnt help. Anyway these things were dotted around and showed up like beacons in the dark.
Just goes to show that you can find some fabulous stuff in the UK and on what many would consider a very ordinary dive.

WOW, Very nice!
