Canon Ixus 70 Underwater case Ikelite or Canon ???

Hello All,
I’m after some advice, I have a Canon Ixus 70 and was looking for a underwater camera case, it looks like I have 2 choices, the Canon WP-DC13 or the Ikelite #6147.10.

My question is, which one do I choose ? The very friendly folks down at Underwater Cameras in London have recommended the Canon one because of its size/ease of use/price I suppose/fit for purpose but I was wondering if anyone had any further thoughts ???

I’m primarily a UK diver, max depth 35m usually but don’t want to limit myself.. and will probably keep my camera for a bit given I’m just a beginner!

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Johnoh..

The canon housing is much more compact and probably lighter too as many of the Ikelite housings have a lrge trim weight attached.

The ikelite housings are rated to 60m rather than 40m for canon own. the canon housing may go deeper without leaking but the controls may not line up coorectly as the case may distort slightly at depth then retuurn to normal when ascending. This has happened to a friend of mine (at about 50m)

Ikelite housings will take wet lenses, whereas not all of the canon housings do. Might be wortyh checking if you thik they would be of interest later.

I have an Ikelite housing but sometiemes do not take it with me due to the weight/bulk and consequently miss out on some chances of shots.

If you do not have an external strobe, the canon housing will probably fit into a BC pocket.

I have the ixus 75 the housings are not that much more money really and I like the ikelite ones. But then depth was the factor for me. I've been told the buttons on the canon ones are better but the cases are none servicable whereas unless you crack the body you can replace buttons etc on an ikelite

Johnoh,
Ask yourself what you want to get out of your photography. If you aim to be a snapper, taking the camera on the odd dive then probably the Canon is what you want. If you want to be an underwater photographer and diving is just the means of getting the shots, then you will probably want the bomb-proof Ikelite. Having a big rig means you have it in hand all dive, whereas a smaller one can be on a lanyard and tucked away. For the last three years I have not dived with a camera firmly in hand for 95% of the dive (you have to let go to put up a DSMB!) - I've not dived cameraless for that time. So ask yourself what you want to be.

Bought a Canon Case for my Ixus70

Hello All,
thanks for the feedback, it helped a lot making a decision on which case to get… In the end I purchased a Canon Case because of the following reasons, my logic might be useful to others..…

I love the Ixus70 because of its size, easy to fit in the pocket (my SLR has been in the cupboard for yrs) and the Canon case just extended that concept..

I’m a beginner and in all likelihood, if I like it enough I’ll upgrade, so best not invest too much when I don’t know the intricacies of U/W photograph.. The Canon case is compatiable with the third party lenses so I might invest in these next…

40m depth rating will probably do me, I’m still a relatively inexperienced diver and my depth is going to be within this range for the foreseeable future..Don’t want to task overload if I do go deeper!

Cost, at Cameras underwater in London the case was £120 which is as cheap as the internet and with my £60 Ixus 70 from ebay I’ve got myself a 7m pixel U/W package for £170.. ohh.. I bought a O ring for £15 as well..…

I’d definitely recommend Cameras Underwater in London, good info, advice and you can try out most of the kit if u ring in advance… Thanks Eva…

One thing I did notice…I liked the Ixus75 screen at 3inches in size… looked noticeable bigger than my 2.5” but then again the buttons looked a little crowded because of it…

Wish me luck!!!

JohnOH..

Ps I’ll just have to bite my lip when kit envy kicks in on the boat and the Ikelite case did look quality…
