I have quite a bit of fiddling with manual white balance over the past few monthe including video. A white card gives the best results, however can be a pain to carry. I am in the process of trying to find a paint to paint a fin white, looks daft but saves a load of hassle, plus its for a video housing it is a bit more difficult to use a card/sheet. Setting the manual white balance gives better results than any filters etc even at places like Capers the results can be obvious.. and without white balance ,go a few minutes in when its a little deeper Last edited by e14724 : 17-07-08 at 05:30 PM. |

| White wrist slate does the job nicely.

| In answer to the original question, white card or grey card are identical for this purpose - the point is they're both neutral colour.

| i use an A4 slate. i cut it in two, made cord loops for hinges so it fits in my pocket. i found i get more accurate wb cal, being able to hold the slate at full arms length +still filling the frame. if there is a large patch of sand, ive used the sand to wb cal before +got good results. ![]() |

| i think the grey slates, are for exposure compensation. with a range of grey slates that will be say 1.0-1.6? equivelent when cal'd on. |

| I have a fuji F31fd - if diving in the red sea what white balance setting do i set it on or does it depend upon the conditions? never used white balance just etnd to use underwater setting but results can be dissapointing. thanks |

| if you can calibrate the wb, i'd do that. i have always found cal, better than auto. +i find auto wb, slows down the camera shutter response. causing me to loose many a good shot, due to combined digi lag, while its doing its thinking then i'd use auto iso +other settings. check each pict. i find the exposure can look better reduced, on occasions. |
