    Help picking a strobe

Hi - I have an Olympus Sp-560UZ digital camera with the Olympus 40 meter PT-037 waterproof housing. I would like to get a strobe but as I am on a budget I will have to look second hand. There are lots on ebay!

Can anyone suggest any decent strobes that I can try to pick up second hand?

    Cheers,

    Mike,
How much are you talking? Problem is the range available second hand is limited, so you might just have to get whatever comes up. I bought 2 Ikelite DS-125s second hand and they are superb, but still £400 second hand.

PS I've got a strobe for sale for £20, but it wont work with digital - no good to you, but if anyone else wants it?

Was that £400 for the pair? I'm in the market for something easy to use on my C5050. £200 is about right for what I'm looking to pay an have heard good things about the DS125s - sorry for slight hijack.

Even the basic strobes don't appear second hand that cheap, other than the Fuji one. No experience of it at all. DS-50s and DS-51s come up fairly regularly (sorry I check Ikelite on eBay regularly you see) and they go for more like 175-200.

No, I meant £400 each. Now that the DS-160 has been announced I would think you could get DS-125s quite cheaply. Wetpixel would be a good forum to check. There are a lot of people who automatically upgrade, with IMHO, little thought for what the benefit of the upgrade is; so there will be a lot for sale in the US shortly.

    Mike,
There was someone on Wetpixel (I think) talking about trading in their D300 when a D700 housing is available. How old is that? Maybe a few months at most and several grands worth of housing! Need I say more?

All my stuff has been bought second hand (apart from a DS125 which I needed ASAP after I flooded one of the SS200s )

As a general rule strobes, unlike housings/cameras, can move with you to a new system. That's why I've consistently advocated to get the best strobe that you can afford to buy.

This may, may, not work if you're going from a P&S to a dSLR but otherwise it mostly does.

Then again there are always those who want the "latest and best" - not necessarily - and that's where bargains are to be had on the likes of eBay.
    Cheers,

Although some of the apparent bargains may be from those that accidentally bought a dog
