Pierre,

I use a cuff dump, I have never tried the shoulder type as Im still on my first dry suit. I have no problems using a reel if I postion myself a certain way air comes out if I postition another way with my arm it wont. I have had no problems to date.

The cuff dump can in my view effect the positioning of wrist slates and computers. But im happy with mine and dont think I would Change.

HTH

This was what I was thinking.. I was going to get one of those slates that go on your wrist but it would interfer with flow of air to my cuff dump. Started wondering how a shoulder dump actually works. mostly they seem to just bubble but you see some people hitting them.

Can anyone explain how it works and why it might be better or worse than a cuff dump?

Jules

Jules hi,

I would only use a wrist slate to have dive info on and not acually for writing so now wear it on my right arm.

My computer is on my left but on the side of the dump nearer to my hand so does not effect air flow.

This has worried me in the past things obstructing but I have just moved things around so that it all now works and it doea work well. Gets a bit croweded with wrist slates compas dive watch and computer though

I've dived both types of dump and I much prefer the auto-dump as it allows you much more freedom with placing equipment on, and movement of, your arm. The auto-dumps work by venting gas when the pressure in the suit reaches a set point, the idea being that as you ascend and the air in the suit expands, the dump expels the excess automatically. The set point is set by the diver by turning the valve and should allow gas to vent when the diver is just on the positive side of being neutrally buoyant.

The reason you see people pressing their auto-dumps is that getting the set point takes some practice and that they have set the valve to be under sensitive. To vent the excess air they press the valve to open it manually to prevent them rising too fast.

I use both

Having had an auto dump jam shut I fitted a cuff dump as well as redundancy. I did this because pulling the neck seal when you have a shed load of deco to do is a very bad idea. (I froze and was nearly hypothermic) I tried the roman salute but that just didn’t work soooooo I fitted a cuff dump. Its fine and very easy to service before every dive (just pop the diaphragm in your mouth )

I do get the occasional wet arm and it’s a PITA with Video or camera work as you can’t switch it off but its not so bad that I would get rid of it. If you horizontal ascend keeping the hands below shoulder height it’s absolutely no problem with a reel.

The only fitting problem is cutting a neat hole in the suit.

I would imagine the standard type wrist slate on your wrist would have as much effect stopping air dumping as a bug stickig out a couple of legs to stop itself hitting a car windscreen too hard. Comfort and reliable "seating" may be much more of an issue I'm prepared to bet 50p on it and may I be 48 on my next birthday if I tell a lie .

Borrow one and give it a try .

Why not just put another autodump on the other arm?
