Anyone tried heated vests? Not the piss take priced diving specific stuff. I have seen a couple of the rechargeable battery ones advertised. They sound OK but the retailers and manufacturers are all world class spin merchants. I don't care what weezle, forth element and the like claim. I have them and still shiver. OK I am a UK diver and accept its part and parcel of the deal if I want to dive all year round but if theres something which actually keeps you comfortable out there and reasonably priced I'd still like to know about it.

4th element base layer sounds like what you need. It's a fast wicking material designed to be under-undersuit They also do an underwear line! You can get 4th element gear from YD's own Mark Powell (www.dive-tech.co.uk)

I use my Helly Hansen LIFA skiing thermals under my Xerotherm Arctics when the temperature drops. They have far better wicking properties than the Xerotherms and I even use them on their own as an undersuit in the summer.

| I'm getting to be a wuss too so I'm thinking of adding 4th elements under my 400 thinsulate. Now would the Arctic be just overkill or is it worth putting out that little bit more cash to get uber warm. Also does anybody think these will bulk me up too much (give than the suit and undersuit are cut a bit generously as it is)? I suppose I could use the Xerotherm for the legs and Arctic top and maybe socks to get in between.

I'd have thought the arctic under a 400g would be a bit excessive and probably quite bulky! Perhaps see if you can borrow the base layer to see how you get on? (Not sure whether anywhere does a hire/try before you buy for these). If you're still cold with the base layer and a 400g then get yourself a heated vest and an argon bottle. If that lot doesn't work, dive abroad in winter
