Post Wastwater Char Survey

Was at the Pinnacles last Sunday and had a chat with a gent name of David Bamford (Environment Agency) who is conducting a Char survey in Wastwater.

Char, apparently, are a red fish and the males have white tips on their finns. They are usually seen in shoals.

Can anyone who spots any let David know where and when at this email address: david.bamford@environment-agency.gov.uk

Ta.

Talking Wastwater 'Char' Survey!

Thank God for that! I thought it said 'Chav' survey!

I can assure you that they will be properly weighted. I have some spare concrete blocks in the back garden.

Talking Sorry, couldn't resist!

If anyone sees a fish in Wastwater can they let us all know!

As I remember from my degree, Char are a cross between two species (can't remember what). The only fish I have seen in Wast are very small and I generally assume they are young trout.

Paul

Char are an arctic species which got trapped in some lakes when the water levels changed at the end of the last ice age. How do I know that? I was once hired to shoot some underwater sequences of the char rising to spawn in Ennerdale. It happens on a particular night in November. They rise from the depths and swim up the feeder streams.
However they got their dates wrong and I spent several nights with the director, fisherman Andy Nicholson, and Forestry Commission officials, waiting. I found a slightly inflated Viking drysuit a perfect way to sleep in the open air!

I've seen two things in Wast, Jack and S**t. And Jack left some while back...

(Don't get me wrong. Great dive. But not exactly heaps of life!)
