| I saw this advertised in the inflight mag on an Emirates flight at New Year and thought what the f***? I was genuinely shocked when I saw it and kind of hoped it was just a big scam, which it wasn't. Some of the same company's other developments were getting flogged in it as well, they aren't much better, I think there last one was in the shape of a palm tree or something. Triumphs of money over sense.

Not condoning what they have done, but I suspect that in a few (20?) you wouldn't know the difference. Giant artificial reef anyone?

| Yeah I saw adverts for this some time ago... As it seems to be going ahead anyway, lets hope that mother nature really does her best and turns it into the massive artificial reef you mention Adrian. |

| Well, there's always that. I'm sure sooner or later some kind of life will come back. (although I don't really take much solace in destroying a coral reef to create an artificial one!) However then you've got to contend with the issue that by the time the poor critters have re-colonised the site (after the concrete, diggers, pile drivers, dredging, builders' waste and rubbish) there will be thousands of people living in the midst of it, each of them driving a boat around spilling oil and petrol, chucking litter in the sea, then there's sewerage and garbage... Life thrives in the most unlikely places, but I don't think it will be as pretty as what's there already! |

| Yup, the Palms are already built and when I was in the Fairmont last week you could see the World taking shape. Trouble is, all the silt is drifting north towards the Musandam. Won't belong before it gets to the Straights of Hormuz and then off to everywhere else in the Gulf.....
