Careful now.. we've been here before.
Yes, this is a pretty appalling incident.

It is also likely to be the work of a very small number of individuals. Let's not tar all fishermen with the same brush; I'm sure most people would NOT do something like this.

As these people see it, these animals are a threat to their incomes and consequently see nothing wrong with killing them when they come across them in their nets. People get all funny when its their livleyhoods being threatened and think that it is perfectly acceptable to do this. Of course it is not acceptable, but i doubt that you would find a single boat out of whichever port who would "grass them up" to what they do.

Sorry, but there are no excuses or explanations that can justify this. It is similar to the sotries of the seal pups bludgeoned to death off the coast of Eire a few months back. Fishermen have far more to be worried about than natural, balanced predation. They need to start thinking about their own actions and those of their fellow fishermen and how that will lead to the total collapse of their livelihood.

Taking out their frustrations by killing porpoises is nothing short of pathetic and sick. It will have no effect on their catches and cannot be the act of anyone with any sense.

I hope you are wrong in claiming that no-one in their home ports would report them or provide information. To cover up such acts is almost as bad as committing them.

I was heartened to see in the Shark Trust newsletter that a fisherman in the south west was responsible enough to report a boat he thought he may have seen dumping some shark carcasses at sea. There are obviously some good ones out there.

Lou

Thumbs down

Absolutely horrifying news...

I continue to be amazed at the ability of some people to totally disregard the lives of other living creatures...

Some good news at least. I am pleased to hear that there are individuals out there who still have a conscience...

Sickening.

No excuses what so ever could justify this sort of barbarity. These people knew exactly what they were doing and that these creatures were protected.

I fully appreciate we shouldn't tar every fisherman with the same brush. I also accept these guys have a tough life and thank them for providing me with the ability to go to a local shop and buy fresh fish.

I sympathise with their problems, but any support they'll get from me is very severely tested each time I see something like this.
