Well, it makes bugger all difference to the sharks in real time terms (may help them long term if people get on the side of 'save the sharks'). If there was other food closer than the chum then ......?

If the sharks are sniffing around near some divers/cage watchers then they aren't having their fins cut off elsewhere.

People feed the birds all the time and their is no evidence that this leads to attacks on humans (excludes bird shit on the head - which IS supposed to be lucky).

I thought fish prodders were so called because ........ so if it is OK for them and other fish then why not sharks and the rest of us?

I don't care if you chop 3 black rhinos into rough squares, add 1 finely diced otter, pour in half a freshly pureed snow leopard, fold in one finely grated red Squirrel, and finally dilute the mix with the juice from 3 freshly squeezed giant pandas. Chuck the whole lot over the back of the boat with a few baby seals to mix it all up and I'd be watching with a pimms and a digital camera.

I am proudly and profoundly hypocritical. Anyone that deliberately hurted one of my cats had better hope they can run faster than me, but animals that are not my pets, well...

FFS Gareth! What the hell are you talking about. You don't dice the otter you leave it pretty much alone so it agitates the mix up for you! Obviously you have to disable it a bit otherwise it would swim off.

I laughed so hard a little bit of wee came out! Not sure this is the best use of my "study" time, as has just been pointed out to me

Isn't that tautology using 'little' and 'wee' in the same part of the sentence?

That is more than we need to know JAG, try not to laugh any more or

When the first shark arrives blow its head off with a 12 bore and this saves all that messy chumming for the others...

Lets not loose sight of the bigger picture here. Sharks are fast becoming an endangered species. Most people still see them as per 'Jaws'. Im forever telling non divers that sharks are not like the ones in the movies. Most people in the Far East still think its cool to eat their fins.

I would have thought that anything that bring sharks into the public eye in an informed manner is a good thing.

Bit like the victorians shooting all the game in Africa, now we shoot them with cameras and most people see the protection of Tiger/Lions etc as a good thing. Thats were we should be with sharks.

Sharks will eat fish anyway, so baiting them is not going to make much difference. I also doubt that it could be done enough for them to become dependent upon it for survival. They are too wild and the sea too big.

Life is not black and white, so sometimes lesser evils need to be endured by some to achive greater goods.

You cant eat without somthing dying first.

Thumbs up Yes

After having spent a rather pleasant (daytime) dive surrounded by Grey Reef Sharks in the Bahamas, after the boat staff tossed sundry edibles into the water, then yes. It was an exciting experience and allowed us to see the sharks up close and in large numbers.
