The standard reference book is 'British Sea Fishes' by the appropriately named Dr. Frances Dipper.

I'll second that, great book with real pictures and not drawings like the collins book of fishes. It will also only show you fish that you will probably see on regular dives.

Thoroughly recommend
"Great British MArine Animals" by Paul Naylor.
It goes on every dive with me and the photos look like th ethings you see, always a bonus.
Also in my bag is "Guide to inshore marine life" by the Marine Conservation Society. Also very good.

Hope that helps

I would also go for 'photographic guide to the sea and shore life of britain and north-west europe' by Gibson, Hextall and Rogers. Sounds a mouthfull but nearly everything you see is in there with real photos, descriptions and ecology info.

Would also second the reccommendation of the Paul Naylor book.

Together your sorted!

My favourite is Debelieus however it's not specific to UK waters.
