| Zebra mussels Is this the 'wandering mussel' (Dreissena polymorpha)? If so it was brought into the UK at Surrey Commercial Docks in about 1824 probably attached to shipping from the Baltic Sea. It had spread through most of the UK's canal system by 1840. There are small colonies of them at Stoney on the 9 to 20m drop-off wall. They are 25-40mm long and can be yellowish grey or brownish grey with alternating zig-zag or wavy bands (hence 'zebra') - quite a pretty shell (if you're in to molluscs) but clearly not welcomed everywhere! | IIRC, mussel invasion depends on how much calcium there is in the water. If it is low, then the shells don't form. One of the great lakes in N America (very highly infested now) has none because of it's low calcium levels. Perhaps why we don't see mcuh of them here. Chinese mitten crab is doing a lot of damage to river bankc though. Adrian
