| Imported post <font color='#810541'>Mary, there is a difference between taking part in a pompous sport and being pompous all the time. To answer your question. Swatting a wasp - no. can't say I have. Though I killed a bee... when it flew into my head while I was on my bike! I had a big lump on my head and the bee died! I did try to give it mouth to mouth though! Now, ants and roaches on the other hand. Yes, have killed many!! Here in Bermuda we have a big problem with invasive ants and roaches. Not good for our ecosystem or for the survival of you and your home! I have to put down poison for them otherwise they will wreak havock in the house, get everywhere, come out of every oriffice... a real problem if not controlled. My last house. I didn't want to put poison down but, after waking up several times with roaches on my face and finding ants had destroyed all the food I had in the world. I knew it had to be done! I do apologise for taking this thread further than it was supposed to go but I don't feel I am soley to blame for that. Ya'll could have gotten out of the kitchen if you couldn't take the heat. I am by all means not the most environmentally friendly and cruelty free person. I drive a car (no other safe way to transport scuba tanks!) when I have to, I use electricity etc. I just feel that we all have a responsability to do our bit for the planet (turn off the lights when you are not in the room/ avoid doing things you know are bad for the planet if you don't have to/ and in the case of animal cruelty....buy cruelty free produsts etc.) and I will encourage others to do their bit and seek ways of doing my bit better all the time. It is impossible to be completely free from causing detrimental impacts on the earth (unless you kill yourself) but for most of us, it is easy to make less of an impact and cause less cruelty than the average westerner and I strive to do the best I can (IMO it is selfish not to make an effort). The choice is yours. I discuss these issues in detail because more often than not, I feel that so many people are not aware of the consequences of these choices. Scuba 1/ Michael - Cool attitude. Wish I could fish.... have been meaning to learn but have no boat and all the good fish to eat are offshore. Unfortunately I have to pay the local fisherman to bring me their catch of the day Lisa

| Imported post Lisa - well put points of view, agree with pretty much all of it. Then you went and spoilt it by saying you live in Bermuda. I hate you |

| Imported post <font color='#810541'>Rob and Kyrre, :d Can't dive all the time!! I was diving on Saturday So anyway, I do dive! (when I am not rabbiting on about environmental issues!) It's cool living right next to the ocean and having the opportunity to dive whenever I can. You can take it for granted though. I work right on the water and could go diving at lunchtime if I wanted to but I don't anymore. After so many dives in the same place one can get bored! One of the dive shops of the dive centre I am a member of got completely destroyed by the hurricane... it just dissapeared! So now we're down to half as many trips and the weather has actually been quite pants lately (we got some big swells from Isabel) so you see it's not all such a divers paradise out here, but I wont ever complain. Also something you might not know is that we are not in the Caribbean, we are much further north and in the winter it gets really cold (compared with down there). I dive in a 5mm bib and brace with a hood but still end up wishing I was in a semi dry or a dry suit. I wont say it's not great to live and dive out here. But, after a while. 20 square miles gets a little small! Drop me a line if you ever feel like visiting and I will take you diving - I promise! Lisa

| Imported post <font color='#0000FF'>Thought I'd revamp this ole thread I just came back from a weekend trip to one of the islands a couple of hours' drive from here. My uncle's got a farm there. He told me of the 1908 whale massacre in his village. 200 whales were driven onto the beach and then killed by the less than 50 adult residents. The methods they used were certainly not "humane" by todays standards. A hay-fork would do it The small and incredibly poor community thrived after this for many years. They had plenty of food all year round and made quite a lot on the market as well, selling meat, blubber and liver oil. The bones and the skulls were used to make fences and were also used when making all kinds of appliances... Whaling today might not be necessary... in those days it could mean life or death for many people up here. If you walk around the graveyards in the area you'll find the names of many children and young adults on those iron crosses. Kyrre
