Scallops dying off

Did my first 2006 dive yesterday. Cold as expected, saw 3 cuttlefish and slip lobsters, havn't seen these lobsters before so it was nice. Anyway, noticed that all the scallops were dead, their shells were everywhere - dozens of them all over the place.

The skipper said it ws the same on other sites, he heard it was a toxin in the water but didn't know if it was natural or not. Do scallops have a season when they 'die off'? Hope it isn't pollution, even the Prestige oil spill didn't affect the scallops like this. The rest of the sea life seemed fine.

How do you mean dead Chris, were the shells open, did they just not 'bounce' about as you got near them, could it be hibernation?

Matt

Diving Location?

You didn't say where you dived?, I normally only come across scallops worth harvesting on the West Coast of Scotland, haven't heard of any problem there yet!

The shells were slightly open and empty, saw some full of starfish though. The scallops were large, size of a large hand.

The dive was off Vigo bay, northen Atlantic Spain.

It's weird, I'll keep an eye on this and on local press. The area is full of Mussel rafts so if it's pollution would cause major problems or the locals.
