Seriously though.

If anyone does want to write a letter to the local paper expressing their displeasure im sure every little helps.

Based on past decisions we can make a difference, we just need to prove to the powers that be that even though they get some tax from these fisherpersons, more can be had from a thriving industry of fishing and diving tourists alike. One which i suspect may dwindle if there is nothing to catchor see!

Again, thanks for the support

I might disagree with that actually. A lot of these businesses run on pretty tight margins so the price doesn't have to drop much for a difference but maybe that might be mitigated by scale. If your not boycotting Lou, I take it you have written to the local paper, MP and MEP about this?... (As we all should, mind!) Democracy at work and all that. Can you tell I'm a student?

I also know that the our fishy loving friends the anglers would love us divers to lean on the powers that be about all issues such as water quality, fishing (especially Irish drift netting) and all other matters green and watery.

Of course I am boycotting - I don't eat fish, full stop!

However, does me not eating fish actually affect the general industry? Not a jot, and I am ot foolish enough to believe it does. I cannot see that enough people would ever be dynamic enough to boycott - as I said it is all about what they can get for pennies.

I have written to my MP on several matters, he was helpful on the wreck legislation and not at all helpful on foxhunting (he is a Tory, mind!). As described above I stopped the local ethical food company supplying destructively trawled scallops (a small impact, but as I called it in my blog, a case of eating an elephant one bit at a time). I have also tackled Tesco's on a personal level over the size of skate wings sold in their stores, and joined with my mother to try and get the Shark Trust to start a campaign of information on fish sizes (specifically skate) sold in supermarkets. A thread about that is here, on YD. I also monitor what is on sale and ensure that none of it is from the MCS endangered list - if it is Tescos are tackled again.

So, I do try and do my bit, directly.

Lou

Thumbs up

Well I'm pleased to hear it. And what's wrong with Tory MPs and foxhunting?

Fish farming might be counterproductive because of the way the fish are fed, but at the same time the current fish quotas are a pretty blunt instrument. Fish don't survive being netted and at the moment it is illegal to land species that exceed the quota, so they are thrown away. We probably need a system that is more sophisticated and less wasteful. We may also need to consider leaving the EU for conservation reasons, because the area around Britain is now fished by a lot of people who were excluded in the past! It is a great deal more difficult to police boats which land fish elsewhere.

That will leave us unable to influence the CFP.. bad mistake. (I would accept the argument that Tony and Co. do not want to change it of course )

<<Somewhere in the great shoutbox cock-up my three duplicate posts left the field (one of Lou's too by the looks of it). I posted a link to the angling site:
