| its advertising and just a sales ploy, there is a whale bone corset on the net but i bet it doesn't contain real whale bones (as its mass produced) i think people should take it for what it is "just advertising" and before jumping to conclusions check out the facts

| maybe not...bit does it make it right or responsible......its all about education...on both sides i agree but if you sell products pretending to be from endagered species or that result from banned practices can you be too surprised if people ask questions... the list gets longer everyday of animals we are loosing for ever.....im no raving enviromentalist...but it is such a waste |

The truth is though that the world is full of all sorts of people - some responsible, some not, some intelligent and some not, and so on. We need rules to protect us all against exploitation by those less scrupulous than we would wish. Sometimes this may restrict our rights as well - and perhaps it's worth giving up the 'right' to consume soup that's described as Shark's Fin even if it isn't - in order to protect the resources of the world against indiscriminate exploitation that will at some point damage all of us (even more than it has already). It's a difficult balancing act and we'll all draw the line at different points, but at least a discussion like this can get us to think about where our personal line is. So - milldog - even though I think I draw my line in a different place than yours, have a green for an interesting debate

The advise given to Blondie was to contact two groups who know far more about this than any of us - the Shark Trust in particular. They would then be able to advise on the correct action, and that was never to hound the restaurant, but to educate it, or inform the authorities who can deal with it accordingly. To just assume it isn't what it purports to be is taking the wrong side of the fence, in my opinion. I would rather avoid something I was not sure of, than unwittingly support shark finning, or similar dubious practises. For anyone who is somehow unsure of just what threat the shark population is under from finning, have a look at the link in my signature. 100,000,000 sharks a year lost, populations down by an average of 80% in the last decade or so.... the stats are frightening. Shark fishing - commercial and recreational, virtually destroyed the British population of sharks in the 70's and 80's. There are some photos about somewhere of Looe in the height of competitive shark angling and large speciems were regular. These days dedicated academic surveys often fail to find a single specimen of any size. This isn't political correctness, this is common sense. Lou
