| Could any one tell me what could possibly learnt from a dead shark? Oh look dead pregnant hammerheads dont give birth. Oh look its still dead, I know lets go gets us a whale while we are at it. That would make good science and maybe a burger or two. Maybe it is time that the states reconsidered their one shark is ok rule. YD collective email assault on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Home The US Fish and Wildlife Service, As they proudly declare "Protecting the Nature of America" Yeh right whilst the other government departments are not to busy bringing peace and democracy to the rest of the world I will stop now before i pop a blood vessel. | maybe im showing my backside here, but whats all the fuss? so he caught a big hammerhead, its dead, he donated it to science rather than his own freezers at home, he didnt tag and release it, why is there a fuss? i dont believe the man broke any laws, it was his catch to do with what he pleased, why the uproar? im just trying to understand what the big deal is, anyone care to take the time to explain it to me? thanks, Ray Yankee Rebel |

| why the fuss?????.......... I guess most on here subscribe to the 'look, dont touch...leave nothing but bubbles' approach to diving. we all want to see them as nature intended. I cant believe there is anything scientific to be gained by the death, and its not being used to feed hungry people..its just a needless waste in the name of sport. Sport is where all the participants have a chance...... steve |

Sod it I'm going to anyway. To answer your troll like question, the big fishy is dead and people on here like looking at big fishy's swimming around alive! Is that a simple enough answer for you or do you still not get it? Last edited by Stesh : 26-05-06 at 08:07 AM. |

| Hi Ray - a few more questions followed by a short explanation........ 1.)How many sharks are killed needlessly every year worldwide? 2.)How many divers would have loved to have seen this one whilst underwater? 3.)What purpose did it serve to kill this wonderful creature? 4.)What are the implications of slaughtering needlessly another one of the apex marine predators? The answer to 1.) Too many! It has been estimated that up to 100 million sharks every year are being killed. Here is a link to peruse - BBC - Science & Nature - Articles - Keeping sharks out of the soup The answer to 2.) The vast majority of divers would have liked to have seen this wonderful creature whilst underwater, rather than on the front page of a newspaper with a death rictus on it's face......... No I have no link to back this statement up, but would you have liked to have seen it whilst diving? The answer to 3.)This is a fairly simple answer I feel. Obviously there is some surmising on my part, but I asked the question so here goes - None whatsoever apart from some sort of selfish and unfeeling, uncaring savagery. I do not know the person involved, but he killed a fish for no good reason as far as I am concerned. He didn't eat it, he didn't sell it - he just donated it - they probably already have enough hammerheads in alcohol, they didn't need anymore. The simple fact is that this was an apex predator. It was a mature female fish in, presumably, prime breeding condition. It wasn't just one hammerhead that was removed from the ocean......... The answer to 4.) Implications - too many to list. Do I really need to answer this one? Explanation - Most of the people here, I hope, feel the same way. This is because as divers we are concerned about the environment we love so much. Most of us here, I hope, would rather see a large fish swimming around where it belongs rather than on the front page of a newspaper next to someone who has just killed it for no good reason other than "sport". Even if we are not fortunate enough to see it personally, it is good to just know that it is out there somewhere. Jeff |
