I don't swallow it for the nutritional value. I swallow it because there's nothing else to do with it when you're underwater and you've got a mouthful

I don't know, I post a serious ecological question, come back on site to view the many serious and educational replies I was expecting and find...yes the thread has degenerated into smut. 'Serious' you say!

On an inshore drift dive a fw years ago ALL the starfish that I saw had their arms curled back (white bits facing out) so they formed a ....... hollow ball shape ......

At the time I wasn't sure if it was their normal means of moving around when the current was flowing or, more likely(?), it was breeding season?

Mind you, maybe they had itchy bottoms and just wanted a good rubbing on the sand?

Bit like the dog we saw at the beach a couple of weeks ago, dragging its bottom along the sand, it was enough to bring tears to your eyes. The kid's found it most amusing
