litter, Pick it up

I was disappointed whilst diving in Naama Bay earlier this year by the attitude of our dive guide to the local environment. I did a check dive out in the bay and was priveleged to have the company of a visiting green sea turtle which happily ate sea grass whilst I got some nice pics. during the dive I noticed a beer bottle in amongst some corals that we had just swam over to and collected it tucking it away in my BCD pocket. Upon surfacing and leaving the water I removed it to place it in a bin, the guide noticed and said "if you start doing that you'll need to take bags down there with you", suggesting that it is a waste of time collecting litter, I mentioned that if every diver collected one piece of rubbish on every dive it would make a difference, it seemed not to make a difference to him though.
Its a shame, these people are making a living off the Red Sea and can't be bothered to give a little effort back. I appreciate that this attitude cannot be attributed to many many excellent professionals out there, but it really is a sad reflection if only on a few.

Well said, Mick.

I always pick up whatever litter I can underwater and dispose of it as necessary. Shame I can't carry the car batteries that have been used a shots and dumped over time Grrrrrrr

You know when you go on a liveaboard? What do you think they do with the black bags of rubbish when you have filled them? Overnight many of them are thrown overboard at night when you are sleeping.

Go to the area around Marsa Alam and see the amount of rubbish on the seabed and the surrounding desert - shedloads of rubbish everywhere. We did a clean-up dive at the resort we stayed and managed to fill a sack full of shit we pulled from the coral and sea-bed. They try and encourage all the divers to do at least one clean-up dive so imagine how much shit is being deposited.

I found it very depressing on the Coroni river wreck in Falmouth 2 weekends ago, plastic bottles, foreign beer cans plastic cake wrappers. It annoys me that people really do not care about the underwater environment.
I thought about picking up some of the rubbish but would have needed 10 or 12 black bin bags to even make a dent on the amount of rubbish down there.
