I don't doubt for a minute based on his previous antics that he was getting up close and personal. Its at the core of his show. He should have been arrested for molesting a dozen times over. The point is he is one of only 12 people in the world ever to have been killed by a sting ray, he was a nice bloke and its sad. Worst still his 8 year old daughter was there which makes me want to cry coz I have kids and the worst thing in the world to happen to a happy kid is to find out dad is not super human and can die. Lets hope it encourages others to be a bit more cautious in the future As for the back lash against sting rays????? Morons of the world please unite so we can drop bombs on you. ATB Mark Chase

| Ozzy Sting Rays It appears that some Australians are taking revenge on the Sting Rays around their coast, because ten have been found slaughtered Ron

| I thought this was going to be some weirdly co-incidental story about Ozzy ozbourne being attacked by a stingray too. Bugger. There are 2 threads about Aussies chopping off stingray tails around somewhere already. I ilke Aussies, I can't be rude about them - even if they are a bit dense sometimes. Quote:

| Yes it is a nasty thing to do however, I think we maybe drawing a fairly long bow in supporting a "vengeance theory" as that's all it is, a theory. The fact is that recreational fishermen here often cut tails off stingrays, to avoid being stung when unhooking them. I've seen stingrays here sans tail, many years ago, way before anyone other than his Mum & Dad knew much of Mr Urwin. There has been similar discussion on the DiveOz forum: Dive-Oz Discussion Forums - Stingrays killed in Hervey Bay Personally I have found that it's perfectly safe to put your boot on the tip of the tail, thus immobilising the sting before removing the hooks. On the other hand, if t's a big un, that may not be so easy (in which case, I'd cut the line - even the dearest hoks are only 50c or so) However, that said, there are those around who are not so enlightened and who take a very uncharitable view about losing a cheap part of their fishing gear. Now Qld has several thousand miles of beaches and probably several hundred thousand recreational fishermen, so the chances of some of these fish being caught in any given week in Qld and having their tails removed are probably fairly high. (That's not defending the practice), regardless of anyone coming to grief in such a highly publicised manner. If we hadn't had the high profile death the week before, I very much doubt that the world news media would be very interested in this story. Richard M. However, the eye-witness TV report I saw (from the cameraman filming) was that the ray was swimming towards the cameraman, who was stationary on the bottom in around 1M depth of water, Urwin was snorkelling along in shot, above and to the right (or left - I can't remember) and slightly behind. The ray saw the cameraman, slowed and turned to avoid him which brought it across the front of Urwin who now found himself directly above the fish in and shallow water, which is when the fish decided it wasn't having any more and struck out (and upwards). Classic case, by the sounds of it, of not giving a potentially dangerous animal sufficient room to manouevre. Anyway, that is all, in the end, just speculation, based on what I've seen/heard; the inquest should tell the full story. Richard M Last edited by Richard Mason : 13-09-06 at 05:14 AM. |
