Scallop Survey Cancelled

Most years, our club spend a weekend or two surveying scallop beds after each amateur scallop diving season, on behalf of the State Sea Fisheries Dept.

Sadly, this beasty was caught in a fishing net today in the area we were planning to survey in a couple of weeks. It's a 2.6 metre (8 feet 8 inches) White Pointer. Photos supplied by another club member.

What amazes me is that with the water temperature still only at 11 degrees C, these things are around here, I thought they were summer visitors only.

The hand belongs to a CSIRO employee.

Where's your sense of adventure!

Many years ago, we were diving off the Atlantic coast of Spain and the local dive guide told us he had seen a Great White while he was diving. He had been down alone to free up the anchor which had stuck. He said he swam rapidly up to the boat and heaved himself in fully kitted. He said that he had tried several times since to do this without success. Amazing what adenalin will do!

Poor shark, saddens me greatly each time I see these type of pics.

I wouldn't cancel the survey, it's not as if the level of danger has increased sinced the last time you've done it. It's the fear factor.

I though they'd cancelled the survey 'cos the shark had eaten all the scallops

Q. Why did the razorbill raise her bill?

A. So the sea urchin could see her chin!
