Goose-Foot Starfish
In all my years of diving I have never seen a Goose-Foot Starfish

Anseropoda placenta - Marine Life Encyclopedia

(BTW what a fantastic web site)

so imagine my surprise when we came across 2 of these beasties on a dive on the 2nd Jan off Dunollie Castle near Oban, in less than 15ms of water.

One of my buddies (also with similar experience) had not seen any before, but what was incredible was that we were diving with his 13 year old son who has less than 15 dives...

Well, actually that was probably why we saw them. Normally, Alex and I would have bombed down as deep as we could have got and then thrown silt over each other amongst much giggling ; but because we were with Stuart who was interested in things such as sea urchins and whelks, we were taking the time to actually look out for things and we came across these guys buried in the silt.

It pays to keep your eyes open and you may see something new on a site you consider quite mundane .

Ace. What a cool starfish. I've never seen one either, but i shall keep my eyes open now. Not hard to guess why they are called Goose-Foot Starfish, is it?

Very nice! According to a Google search, it seems to occur all around the British Isles, from the Shetlands to the south coast as well as in the Bay of Brest.

Just looked at that Marine Life Encyclopoedia. Pretty good site, thanks for telling us about it.

I've never seen that starfish before. Looks great.
