With his nose broken and with gouges in his face, shoulders and chest, the 41-year-old was able to sit up in his hospital bed and tell doctors: "I must be the luckiest man alive. It had my entire head in its mouth and I thought I was dead."
Personally, I'd consider having my nut inside the jaws of a great white would be pretty unlucky

he was very lucky I agree.
but its funny howmany shark attacks seem to around people carrying wounded pray. I have met a couple of divers both bitten when spear fishing, opening abalone must also release somthing into the water that smells tasty to a shark.

You don't "open" abalone as such, they are just like a big limpet, or a big ormer, so you approach them very carefully, quickly slide the ab iron underneath the foot and give it a quick flick which bumps him off the rock, with no damage. The base of the foot is very leathery and tough, so little risk of wounding if it's done properly.

We have two species down here in Tasmania; the Blacklip and the Greenlip Abalone. Blacklips are in the South and Greenlips in the north. The Greenlip has a much prettier shell than the Blacklip; not sure about taste comparisons though, as I've only ever had the Blacklip as I haven't done much diving on the North Coast (well not when I've had my goody bag with me anyway).
