It empties fresh water into the hole and screws up the salinity of the water and the lobster just comes out. Then you grab it behind it's claws and stick it in your goodie bag. I've tried this and it works every time a treat.

I suppose that's the same as the fairy liquid idea, it simply messes up the salinity.

Hi Gunnar

In the UK, as scubees we don't need a licence - just need to ensure that we observe minimum catch sizes.

Defra, UK - News releases 2006: Lobster landing size increase proposed

Ireland is a differnt kettle of fish - and I believe divers aren't allowed to take lobsters or crayfish.

Not a fan of hunting for dinner myself, but if you do take it is worth noting that a 'good' size for dinner is rather bigger than the 'legal minimum' which is still not a mature animal.

Also, never put more than one lobster in a bag unless the claws are tied up, 'cos they will chop each other to bits and by the time you have got back in the boat you will mostly have bits of claw and leg that are not worth cooking.

A crab hunting diver I know uses the length of his hand (heel of hand to finger tips) to judge the size of the carapace - it quickly removes the magnifying effect of the water and estimates a good size (depending on how big your hands are).

Iain.

To be honest I see it as catching something to eat. Is that not how you survive? Or have we all forgotten/lost sight of how food appears on our plates???
Surely catching your own is better than buying a lobster or any other seafood that has been caught by commercial fishing methods, shipped/flown/driven half way accross the world/country and then had a profit slapped on top of it by Tesco?
By the way who knows what hardship the poor animal suffers in the process, do you think the fisherman/supermarkets actually care? It's just a profit margin for them.
I think this whole country has lost it's grip on reality!
In the case of crabs and lobsters, the fishermen actually do care!
(I concede the profit margin comes into play)
locally, much of the catch is exported in "vivier" type live tanks on articulated lorries, and if it is dead or in dodgy condition on arrival at it's destination market, (spain, italy etc.) the fishermen dont get paid, so great care is taken to ensure that the treatment and conditions the critters endure are as stress and damage free as it is possible to make it.

I've said it before n' I'll say it again, fish is food
mike.

That's right but it doesn't pollute the hole. It just washes away. Few weeks later....... Another lobster taking up residence.

No shellfish take allowed on Scuba here.

I don't eat fish meself, but Mrs Mick was threatening to stand in the recent elections here as a single issue candidate. Namely to change the law to allow her catch lobbies

you will never learn to catch a lobster in scapa flow

I was horrified to find out that there are no lobsters in scapa flow around the wrecks i didnt see one. I was chatting to a local fisherman who was blaming divers for this problem bagging them all. Come on you scapa flow divers spare a thought for me i travell all that way have to make do with scallops and crab.

If you can answer yes to all of these then go ahead, just dont expect me to be overly happy that you have bagged one i.e. the one that I and a few other divers wont get to see (ever again) thereby reducing my enjoyment of the dive, I go to see life, the wreck just gets in the way (usually) .
This is what i have to agree with because what persan can say what fish belongs to him and that he can take it? This is why i think if you want to take fish you should first require to have a liscence to do so.

Is it me or is there a heavy sense of irony in what you wrote.
