Yea but no but... that sponge is bit more knobbly and gnarly isn't it. Whereas this was slug shaped but could have been a bit of sponge or... a sea squirt as Chris P suggests. Or an alien from another world in an underwater disguise.

having done some quick internet research, i have to agree with ChrisP that it is more than likely a colonial sea squirt.

Certainly some of the pics I have found point in that direction. Which is more than a seasquirt can do.

It would be feasible, seeing as the bits of the pier which are underwater are convered in lightbuld seasquirts, which may not look it, but are reasonably closely related.
