Unhappy Correa lifts ban on sale of shark fins
Reading Wetpixel for updates for our trip, someone mentioned the President had lifted the ban on sales of shark fins, so I went in search and found this. This is bad news.

I did note that it said "only sharks caught accidentially".... yeah right... quite a few should end up that way I should think or am I being cynical...

Boycott Equador is what I say... I shall refuse to buy any more panama hats, does anyone know what else they produce that I could refuse to buy?

Seriously this is more bad news for us, the planet and especially for the poor sharks. I tried to find an email address for the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, but the don't seem to publish one.

Madam

I feel I must complain in the strongest terms possible about the decision by your president to allow the killing of sharks for their fins. Throughout the world this is becoming recognised as an inhuman act and the damage being done to the food chain by the indiscriminate slaughter of the apex predators constitutes a serious risk. I realise that as a small country you need to generate income, particularly foreign reserve, wherever possible but I would ask you to advise your government of the strength of feeling in this country and request that your president reconsiders your country's position.
