I'm not sure we in the UK can take any moral high ground whilst we carry on producing meat, particularly poultry, in the way we do.

£2 for a chicken?

Actually, yes we can. Chickens are not endangered, and if properly done are killed in a humane way. Yes, I know before you say it that it sometimes isn't - but it can be, whereas the killing of what possibly could be a fairly intelligent animal using a harpoon that takes a long time to kill is 100% unacceptable.

I did read somewhere that Japan has a stockpile of whale meat and they are killing more whales just to prove the point that they should be able to.

The main point is however that if Japan carries on and is not stopped there will be no whales left.

How do you propose we stop a powerful rich nation from taking part in a legal activity in international waters over which we have no control whatsoever?

It could be done by a simple boycott of Japanese products - question is - do we care enough to stop buying all those important gizmos that the Japanese produce?

Without wishing to be confrontational (I detest whaling) a consumer boycott would not be effective. Quite apart from the fact that consumers do not care the key issue is detecting the goods that damage Japanese business interests enough to persuade Japanese companies to lobby the government and fight the pro-whaling lobby.

The gizmos the Japanese produce are made in China.

My own (and only) solution is to buy a Russian navy surplus submarine and sink the whaling fleet. This would involve finding about 25 million pounds and being prepared to murder a large number of human beings. Sadly, I do not have the money. I fear that no other solution would be effective.

1. yes they are made in China but the profits go to Japan so a boycot would work - if people could be bothered

2. There's lots of humans and not many whales.

There used to be a T shirt with "save the whales - harpoon a Honda" on it years back.

Perhaps the Australians should declare war on Japan if it does hunt in Ozzie waters...

I have a feeling I know how this will pan out

Chris

edit - I perhaps should point out that many Japanese exports go to countries that support whaling or whose populations are too poor to care

The thing is it is a fleet, not one or two scientific vessels, that is going out to hunt up to 50 humpback whales. Not good. Especially if you regard the school of thought that Whales are more intelligent than humans.

Please e-mail the embassy to pass on your complaint, and please add this to any other fora you may be on.

OK, its on DTW and finstrokes, will sort out postin it on RBW and SW mafia, and anybody else I can think of!
