I love the thought that you all expect these guys to lovingly and carefully manhandle a pissed off 32 foot shark back into the water from a working boat in rough seas. These guys are trained to process fish, not handle large predators. Even if they knew it was worth next to nothing, they'd have let it die before chucking it back in.

I wonder how far offshore they were when they caught it? I've done a fair bit of diving down that end of Cornwall but never seen one in the wild, and i don't think i'd fancy my chances if i was in the water with one...........

Thresher would probably be more scared of you if it met you. They feed mostly on small fish, herring and mackerel in particular. There used to be a good run of them up the East Anglian coastline years back when there were herring. Sadly the herring are now fished out, plus the incresead water temperature is now changing the species found in the southern North Sea.
IIRC at one point in time the largest ever Thresher recorded in the UK was caught at Great Yarmouth (I'm going back to the 70s) it was caught in a trammel net and was 50m off the shore at South Beach. Water depth there would have been a couple of meters at most....

[rant on]I agree it should have gone back. I must admit I don't like fishing methods and the fact fish stocks are low is down to the way they are fished. But money makes the world go round. They'll fish until there's none left then blame the government for not imposing stricter controls, then go on the dole and we'll pay them.[rant off]

Just to upset everyone further, I was told that in Thailand, decent sized fish sell for 200 baht (£3) each including Manta Rays.

We already pay them. The fishing industry is subsidised heavily. Not just here but throughout the world. Its well understood in the industry that a lot of the massive EU decommissioning grants paid out were subsequently spent on new boats.
