Seconding Paul Naylor's book. It's not perfect (there are a few notable absences) but it's probably the best I've seen.

Yes, "Great British Marine Animals", another vote.

I know you asked for a book - there is a great DVD, "British Sea Life", by Anita Sherwood. It comes with a small guidebook as well. Link here to one supplier.

The Paul Naylor book is very good but has a slight 'coffee table' feel to it, I think. I've looked for stuff in it on several occasions and haven't been able to find it.

These Seasearch Observer publications are excellent as they give stacks of information including size of creature, type of habitat, rarity etc.

I've got British Sea Fishes by Francis Dipper (Divernet - Diver Magazine Online | SCUBA | Diving | Dive Shows | Gear Tests | Travel | News. OK, it only covers fish, but it does it very well. It's nicely divided into habitats and has helped on many occasion to identifying things. I've often referred to it as "the trainspotters guide to fish" - but that's supposed to be a complement!

Just re-read the original post - by "essential" do you mean "comprehensive"? If so, there are so many species that it's just about impossible to have one good book that covers everything. The nearest I know of is probably "Handbook of the Marine Fauna of North-West Europe", by Peter J Hayward and John S Ryland, ISBN-10: 0198540558. - link to one supplier here. This book is an identification key, and doesn't really cover things like behaviour. Even this book isn't completely comprehensive - and it's a bit of a dry read! You might want to have a look at a copy first - universities should have it in their library if they do marine biology. For the vast majority of the things we're likely to see, the books already mentioned are fine. Best of luck.
