    Sharkeys back !

For those of you who regularly dive Portland this will come as no surprise but "our" shark is back for the third year running.

He seems to patrol the area between the West Shambles buoy and Pulpit Rock at the tip of the Bill. Like all sharks he is only interested in his stomach and menaces divers with plaice or other flatties on their strings.

Had a couple of friends who claim to have been scared s**tless by him coming out of nowhere and smashing into them on their ascents, when their catch was flapping away.

Clearly the fish blood and distress signals attract him. Must be pretty scarey as these two guys are men of steel underwater and both dropped their belts and emerged gibbering for the Rhib to get them very very quickly indeed !

Saw a thresher off the Bill myself 2 years ago but this chappie appears to be a Porbeagle about 2m + long, with a real bad attitude.

Thought it might just be Scuttler with a hangover for a while but no - it's a proper Sharkey Warky !

Anyone else seen him/her when down here ?

Not personally but I was "warned" by a guy getting out at Chesil that one had been right up to him while he was spearing flatfish quite a long way out.
He said he thought is was a porbeagle. It would scare the bejeezus out of me if I saw it coming towards me. On the other hand, it would be great to get a photo.

Was that this year? Plaice don't usually come on to Chesil in decent numbers until the Autumn. Was it a shortish, stocky, 40ish Portlander with cropped fair hair - he is the only person I know mad enough to bother flatty bashing off Chesil but he got sharked off the Shambles.

Saw a Smoothhound in the distance on the aftertide drift on the Shambles a few weeks ago, heart stopped for a tick when I first saw it (always a bit nervous on that dive as I have heard all the stories). It looked pretty mean and is very shark like but was only 3 feet long, just lying on the bottom looking at me and didn't even move as I went past.
