Great Barrier Reef protected Great Barrier Reef protected
The Great Barrier Reef became the world's largest protected marine reserve yesterday, after the Australian government banned commercial fishermen from a third of the World Heritage-listed attraction. The coral reef, which extends for 1,430 miles along the coast of Queensland, is threatened by over-fishing, global warming and fertiliser run-off from sugar cane farms.
"As an insurance policy for the future of the reef, it's an incredibly important step," said Bruce Kingston, a spokesman for the reef's marine park. Nearly two million tourists visit the reef each year, injecting £1.7 billion into the Australian economy. Nick Squires, Sydney
