    Thresher shark in Torbay?

Just got back from a dive only to be told of an unconfirmed sighting of a thresher shark in the bay following a pod of dolphins, no doubt following mackerel much as the dolphins do.

As I say, unconfirmed but the guy who identified it does know his sharks so I am told.

Shame I have not got time to go back in myself but kind of interesting to know an encounter is a possibility.

Little Naughty and I were diving at Babbacombe this morning (about 10ish) and the fishermen on the harbour wall started shouting and pointing at something in the bay near the beach. We were almost ready to get in the water and looked down into the sea. There were two divers in the shallows at the end of their dive and, circling them, was a huge dark grey shape. Its fins broke the surface a couple of times but we didn't get a clear look at whatever it was.

When the guys got out they hadn't seen it as they were looking for cuttlefish
If you have to think about it for more than thirty seconds, you probably shouldn't get in.

No doubt the shark was looking for yum yum cuttles aswell.

A thresher would be easy to identify, the tail would break the water if it was in the shallows I would imagine

Didn't see its tail but then, I was looking towards the fishermen when it did actually break the surface so I can't really comment. I'll ask Little Naughty tonight as she was looking at the water when its fins appeared.

Whatever it was, it was big and very close to the divers. Just as well they didn't see it, they would have had one hell of a fright!

It might have been, but it seemed to be the wrong shape for a basker. It was quite sleek and 'shark-shaped', if that makes sense. Its head was more pointed than a basking shark's.

Heaven knows what it was - could've been a porpoise, I suppose.

Unlikely so close to shore, I have seen Tope around here before but again, usually a bit further out

lol...Threshers are not uncommon in British waters so it is possible, I have seen Tope in the bay, that make you take a deep breathe as the come gliding past I can tell you... very much a shark shaped shark and when three or four foot comes into view from the gloom...well... I am glad they are not attracted to brown adrenalin
