Who is shooting them and why?

Some idiot fishermen and owners of salmon farms.
Why? Because they have lost respect for their environment and whereas nature takes only what it needs - man seems to think it can take as much as it wants!
Because they haven't the sense to realise that 1. A live seal is worth more to the community for tourism than a dead one 2. That there are other ways to deter seals from salmon farms than shooting or drowning them.
Also they think that the seals are the reason for the reduced fish catches in the North Sea. The reality (Sea Mammal Research Unit - St Andrews Uni report) is that seals take less than 1% of the total stock biomass of fish in the N Sea and the real reason for dwindling fish catches is OVERFISHING by the fishermen! (Notably the large factory ships!)
