| Diving in Lanzarote ? Hi Anybody know what the diving is like in Lanzarote I am going there on the February stopping in Puerto del Carmen . What are the best dive sites ? I have found a web site for Safari Diving who have a dive center close to our apartment . Has anyone used them ? Or does any body know of a good dive shop there . I just want to do some holiday diving nothing technical . Cheers |

| We were out there about a year ago, and had a great time. I think the dive centre was centro de buceo atlantica, very easy to find - just look for mcdonalds on the main drag, cross the road, go down the stairs to the beach and the dive centre is right there. The guy that runs it is a sweetheart, his name's Jim (Jaime in spanish) his mom is english, and his english is probably better than mine! As the dive centre is on the beach (about 30 feet from the sea!) He brings the rib right up to the door - literally! So no long walks with kit on! (If you dive from the old harbour - watch out for the "giant" giant stride entry from the wall though!) Have a good time, if you do meet up with Jim, he is partial to a Jack Daniels! |

14 of us are there in Feb and will be using the services of Calipso Diving in Costa Teguise. www.calipso-diving.com They are not based in Carmen, but you will see their vans parked off the main beach at Playa Chica every day. Nothing wrong with Safari if you are doing the odd dive, but I wouldnt go with them for more than a day. They do tend to do the same sites, not surprising really when you are on the beach. The best diving in Lanzarote is at Mala in the North and that's one of the reasons we use Calipso. They have a fleet of Iveco minibuses and transport divers to any dive site. Very flexible and also means that if Carmen gets blown out you can still dive on the East side. Quite a few on here have been with Calipso. Checkout ............. http://www.yorkshire-divers.co.uk/fo...ht=lanz arote HTH But if you want more specific info about dive outfits or the Island itself email/PM me. Rgds TerryH |

| Lanza diving I learnt with Safari (p.d. Carmen) and, as others have said, the facilites may not seem up to much but the instructors/guides all seemed professional and looked after us well. The bonus is that the school is situated RIGHT on the beach front, so walking to the water fully kitted is not too much of a chore. I have since also dived with DiveCollegeLanzarote http://www.divecollegelanzarote.com quite a few times and enjoy the diving in and around Playa Blanca. This may be a little far if you don't intend on hiring a car but I would recommend it as an alternative to Carmen if you fancy a change. Dive safe Mark

Agreed, Calipso are a superb outfit and Andy particularly is a belting laugh (good diver too). Mala is a great place to dive but does suffer from having German nudists around the path to the water entry point. They seem to have their clothes on when you get into the water but when you come out they are all naked - it must be some in joke that they all share. Unfortunately, they are usually all old, fat blokes (but arn't most nudists) My absolute favourite dive has to be the wrecks in Carmen harbour as the first is at 18m and the rest are around 30m (all pretty damn convenient for Padi divers really). I know that Calipso will still pick up people that are in Carmen even though they are not based there themselves. |
