To Spain where I use Scubadoo, near Torrox, I fly MyTravelLite and I get a whacking great divebag in for £15 each way. Comes under "Sports Equipment"

Well they do golf equipment so why not?

Spoke with Britannia Airways this morning to enquire about excess bagage costs for a trip to Sharm in May and was told £60.00 for 15kg - hmm, I thought little expensive but I'll check that the group is happy to pay that (going to be cheaper than the £6:00 per kilo per flight at the airport anyway).

Phoned back this afternoon and was told it's now £99:00 for 10kg!

WTF!

Robert

Ive got an even better idea - and Im afraid it is NOT politically correct. This arose from a £108 stinging for excess baggage recently to the maldives. Smarting from this event, I noted how many large (OK - fat bast,,,,,,) were boarding the plane. I bet they did not pay excess for their personal excess !!

Anyway - the simple answer - weigh the person AND his luggage, set a max personal weight of say, 15 stone for the person (calculated on my luggage excess !!!!) and charge the buggers for the flab.

I flew from Phuket to Glasgow yesterday:

HKT - BKK on Thai airways (20 kg limit, 7kg hand)
BKK - LON on Quantas (20kg limit, 7kg hand)
LON - GLA on BA (20kg limit, 7kg hand)

My suitcase was 20.2 Kg, my divebag as 10.5kg (rest came crated with YBOD), laptop case 10.5kg, second hand carried bag 5kg plus my camera and I wasn't charged a penny in excess baggage, I suspect it was because they checked it all the way from Phuket.

Pack your dive gear in a golf bag and take it along as sporting goods. Or- and here is a handy hint- buy a newspaper from the airport shop then stick your regs and any other heavy stuff in the plastic newspaper bag. They don't weigh them...

Off to Madeira in 6 weeks on Exel airways, they give you the standard 20kgs but will let you have an additional 10kg specifically for diving gear - and they're happy to take tanks provided that they're empty and the valves are open.
I thought this was really pretty good considering how tight-fisted most airlines are usually.

I haven't had problems with Excel yet, they always seem to be OK with this. It was only last year though they included Egypt flights in with the 10kg allowance.
