| I lived in Upper Hutt for 4 years and most of the time you can get in the water somewhere around Wellington. Makara Beach is sheltered from southerlies though you need to look at what is happening over the Tasman to judge conditions there. I have been down there on a flat calm sunny day to find six foot breakers crashing on the beach due to a storm off Oz. Wellington is not the most exciting diving area in NZ but it was nice to be able to keep the gear in the back of the car and go for a dive after work on a nice day. I used to clock up about 150 dives a year when I lived in NZ. |
