It used to be a small hippy arty/farty community, but now it is a holiday town filled with gap year students and yummy-mummys in SUVs, with a few dazed hippies wandering round wondering where their halcyon days went (and no, they are not DIR folk….)

Still the diving is good – kinda like Falmouth with sharks. You never forget your first wobbegong – just like marine axminster rugs.

The beach launches and recoveries via RIB (metal hull, twin 100s….) are superb fun – yeehah. Well, the recoveries are more like slam it as far up the beach as you can get.

Cheers

Snash
I fancy Byron Bay too!! so many places, so few weeks. Apparently internal flights are good and cheap (Noosa mate says it is about £30 between Queensland and NSW) so perhaps a bit of penetration is on the cards (wreck of course).

Weedy sea dragons can be found most days (if they are not hiding) off Shelly Beach in Manly, fantastic beginners dive site that it is fairly difficult to get tired of.

And the best bit. Sydney water is currently 21/22 degress and up in queensland it was 25deg over xmas when I was there...

You'll love it
Mooloolaba would be worth the trip to write in my log book. Where is Manly?

Manly is one of the beaches on the North Side of Sydney Harbour.
A ferry goes directly there from Circular Quay (In the City Centre)

Useless bit of information Shelly Beach is apparently the only West facing beach on the East coast of Australia, figure that out if you can

Yeah I know! I was in the club pool last night and we were practising that BBC advice about diving back to back if you are attacked by a shark. Some smart arse then said: "ah but what if they come in from the side?" so we decided you need 4 in a back to back square for an all round view. But then who is going to lie underneath and look at the sea bed as you ascend?

The dilemma would be: take a photo first and then punch it on the nose?
Or punch it on the nose and then get a photo?

Hopefully all my shark encounters will be with the friendly kind.

Manly is one of the best beaches in the Sydney area. The beach, sea and local eating houses are really great.

There is a funny past time at Manly, loads of people go there and either sit on or walk along the beach eating fish 'n' chips from the many chippies in that area (don't know why you would want to come all the way to oz for chips) but it really is a thing to do!

Funnily enough Dibbler (YD Member in Sydney) has been in touch via pm and he dives out of Manly at weekends so we can hopefully meet up and go for a dip with him.

See? YD bringing the world together!!!!!!
