Question Where to go - decisions, decisions....

Hi Mrs Whistler here

We have got an unexpected 2 - 3 weeks off work to be taken in December or January(not Xmas).

The dilemma is where to go as this year we have been lucky enough to go to Malta in January, Tunisia in March and are off to Marsa Alam, Egypt for 2 weeks at the end of July. We have been to Cyprus frequently in the past couple of years so wont be considering this as a destination. In past other holidays have been to Nuweiba, Florida (St Pete's / Englewood /The Keys), Majorca, Ibiza and mainland Spain (Nerja).

What do we like? We don't have kids so just us to consider (mid 30's). We want it to be hot (well at least very warm). Mr Whistler obviously wants to dive, dive, dive. I just want to lay in the sun and snorkel a bit. We don't want a nightlife (hotel bar is fine), and happy to stay at the hotel so being remote wouldn't be a problem. I don't want luxury but I do need my home comforts.

We have seen the Dominican Republic AI 4 * for about £600 each but haven't a clue about this island.

Any suggestions for a faraway holiday? We would have a maximum of £1500 to spend.

So - over to you - where do you suggest??? All suggestions gratefully received!

Mrs Whistler

if it was me, it would be either Maldives or Thailand

both should be within budget at that time of year.

Thailand or Malaysia without a doubt given you´ve tried most everywhere else.

Warm / hot, friendly, safe, can be luxurious at a good price, great diving, great food etc. etc.

If you want to dive, avoid Malaysia at that time of year. The only worthwile exception being Sipadan. West coast of Thailand is good, as is Indonesia (Manado, Bali, Lombok) and of course, the Maldives. All reasonably priced, hot, far away and with great diving. The Caribbean is also worth considering eg. Caymans, Bahamas, T&C, Grenada, Tobago but can be pricey that time of year. Cuba and Mexico (Cancun, Playa) are cheap but the diving isn't brillliant.

I'd go to the Maldives in January. I wouldn't go at the beginning of December. It can be very wet then as the monsoon is switching over.

May I suggest that you have been abroad far too often recently and you should instead give the money to me, as I won't be having a foreign holiday this year. Who do you think you are - John Bantin?

Australia.

It's a long way, and so IMHO, if you are going to go there, then make the most of it and take three weeks. Missus Janos and I went a little while ago, and we had three holidays in one:

1) Week seeing friends and relatives who've emigrated
2) Week diving on the Undersea Explorer (highly recommended)
3) Week in a massive bus with Missus Janos and her sister, cruising around the beautiful countryside up North.

Money is always a problem though, but we factored in the money we weren't spending in the UK by being away for a month

Janos

Don't go to Nerja, I've been there recently and there is one good dive centre there but unfortunately noting to see in the water.
Few fish, certainly no wrecks, just rocks
