| NW France - dive sites I hada very pleasant non diving week in NW France (Brittany) last week, I did however keep my eyes open to see what diving they might do over there. The NW coast (Channel side) looks very similar to Cornwall and I found an outfit in Camaret run by a German chap, seems to be where he does his holiday stuff when not back in Germany. He has a German website for the club he runs out of Camaret and suggested he was happy to take Bsac/Padi/SSA/ virtually anyone and they wouldnt come under French juristiction, so no medical etc required. Unfortunately I didnt have long to talk to him, his English though was good, he suggested 25/30m range stuff, wrecks and fishy stuff too. If the local fish shops suggested anything they have an abundance of marine life (for the moment anyway). His club is Club TBAC tel (00 33) 6 77 98 62 43 or (00 49) 172 60 66 307 websites Club TBAC TAUCHSCHULEN - Camaret sur Mer, Bretagne, Frankreich and TBAC I also spotted more dive related stuff but being France they were of course closed in Concarneau and Fousenant, one shop was listed as a Subchandler, their name was Grolleau (I think) they too may have websites. I was surprised by the amount of diving they appear to have in the area, it could well be worth a hunt through google. The area was most unspoilt, the roads (when you get there!) were empty and I would be very surprised if the diving was rubbish. From the surface I could see many barely covered rocks that looked perfect for creating a superb marine environment and great opportunity for creating wrecks. Many of the areas had a history of smuggling and the coast is littered with lighthouses. I noticed from my map that they seem to have Parc areas that extend into the sea and saw a lot of graffitti suggesting a No vote for a new marine reserve, which would obviously have an impact on the local fishing industry which seemed bouyant. Every market and supermarket appeared to have a huge selection of wet fish for sale including good sized Lobsters and Crabs (still alive in tanks). Could be worth a good look sometime soon. Matt |
